St. Anne, St. Joachim, and their
daughter conceived without sin, Mary |
December 8 is a religious bonanza. For Jews, this evening is the beginning of Hanukkah, commemorating the miracle of holy oil in the newly rededicated temple after the Maccabees defeated the Greeks. For Catholics and Orthodox Christians, today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, which honors Mary's conception without sin as preparation for her role as the Mother of God. And in Mahayana Buddhism, today is Bodhi Day, the commemoration of the day Siddhartha Gautauma attained enlightenment and became the Buddha (the enlightened one).
Hanukkah Sameakh to my Jewish friends!
Happy Bodhi Day to my Buddhist friends!
A blessed Feast of the Immaculate Conception to my Christian friends!
All three of these holidays celebrates spiritual purity, faith under difficult circumstances, and happy endings.
